Marlborough White Horse

A gentle 4 mile circuit around the Marlborough white horse starting and finishing in the High Street. If the outward stage of the walk is taken going a little south up and above the horse there are good views over town, Merlins's Mound, Marlborough's own Silbury Hill and looking North West towards the Ridgeway on the horizon. The return loops back through Manton passing The Outside Chance pub. Having walked past the tennis courts and running track there is an opportunity to view the white horse from below. The sound park is centred on the horse.

The Marlborough or Preshute white horse lies on a shallow slope south of the A4 behind some tennis courts. Not exactly hidden but you need to know where to look. The Marlborough White Horse greets those coming out of St George’s parish church in Preshute. It was cut and maintained, tradition suggests, by a High Street school in 1804. Located near the site of the former castle, was this horse cut to mark the 600th anniversary of the town’s charter granted by King John?
